Description

Holidays Are Over

The adventurous trip to Bird Island and discovery of the robber kingdom automatically earned a nickname for Roshan, Saman, Manori and Maalika.

The people of the area thereafter referred to them as “the Playful kids.” But it was Jamis who coined and appropriate name.

“It’s not enough to call it such. We should call their deed as Adventure of the Playful kids” laughed Jamis and released a mouthful or red betel chew fluid to the ground.

“Why use the word ‘Adventure?” Roshan baby has told those reporters that their adventures had only begun!” said Siripeenu.

“Yes, yes, there will be more adventures. Although the matter was serious, it ended on a high note.. sand after they telecast it on TV, they got much publicity” said Setan, while cleaning the fish net on the beach.

But when faced with difficult and dangerous situations, to be calm and to act intelligently is indeed heroic. Thus spoke the Principal.

The Principal went on to say that complete details of this entire incident would be published with a photo of Roshan in the School’s Annual Magazine.

Back at the hostel after school Maalika resting in bed softly said to Manori who was in the adjoining bed “Couldn’t it be Savthri who may have sent that letter?”

“No. Don’t make direct accusations like that, nangi. What theyare saying also has some truth. What we did may have had serious consequences. What they say is that the “job” was too big for us small ones” lectured Manori to her sister.

“What is this secret between the two of you?’ Sandali who is in the next bed, asked Manori as she walked in wiping her face with a towel.

“Sande, it’s a trivial problem that nangi is faced with” said Manori and told one of her best friends the secret.

“It could be Savithri. She is the on who is bothered so much about your picnic” said Sandali, thoughtfully.

“But we can’t assume things. Let’s wait a Little” Manori said adding “don’t just make enemies.”

“Anyway, we’ll just tell this to our sectional Prefect akka” proposed Sumudu and Sachini.

“That’s fine….”

“No. He’ll see it tomorrow.”

“Hey, Roshan, have you finished your picture?” Sanjitha asked Roshan at the hostel.

“Oh, that problem is over” said Roshan said seriously.

“Now how will you get at the picture in your sister’s suitcase?” Hasitha asked Roshan near his bed.

“I have a plan. Let’s See” said Roshan thoughtfully.

“Even if that picture is not there, this picture is nice, Roshn” Hasitha said again. The two went to sleep. But Roshan could not sleep. He was thinking of how to get the picture in Manoris suitcase and to present it for the competition.

“Although father promised to send Jamis to his sisters’ school in the morning, will he remember to do it” thought Roshan. He was tossing and turning on the bed thinking of this and couldn’t fall asleep for a long time.

“the Principals room has been broken into last night” this was the news that greeted the children when they woke up the beds next morning.

“Who has broken into the room?”

“How was it done?”

“What has been taken?” were the questions being asked by all.

“The money in the cabinet has also been stolen.” Children were talking of what they heard.

A lot of children rushed in. but they missed the news item. Malika felt very hapy. But she was sad thinking of whether her brother and parents saw it or not.

“Must somehow let Aiya know by tomorrow morning” said Maalika to Manori thinking of something else.

“Nangi” Manori spoke to her near the bed and asked “Are you angry with Lona nangi?”

Malika glanced at her sister. “I don’t like her very much” she said.

“Why?”

“I don’t know. She’s some different sort.”

“Sin, Nangi” Manori said quietly. “She nearly got that sickness again today.”

“what sickness akka?” Asked Maalika surprised.

“She has a sickness in her heart.”

Maalika jumped off the bed. “You haven’t told me” she blamed her sister.

“I did not tell you as you are angry with that girl.”

“I am not angry with her. I only said that I don’t like her. But  I am now sad. It’s a sin, isn’t it akka? Maalika’s eyes are full of tears. “Where’s Lona now?”

“She’s on the next bed. It will be an awful thing if she’s unable to come for the literature society meeting tomorrow” said Manori sadly. “We will not only lose a vote but also the opportunity to select the best person for the Magazine.”
