Description
National Security Beyond 2030
The book “National Security Beyond 2030: Navigating Sri Lanka’s Strategic Future in a Changing Regional and Global Order” provides a timely, forward-looking redefinition of what constitutes national security. It argues that traditional methods focused mainly on military strength and territorial defence are now inadequate for ensuring a country’s future. Instead, it promotes a broader, more integrated view of security that covers the protection of people, institutions, resources, and future potential. This wider perspective considers economic stability, social equity, and environmental
sustainability, technological progress, and diplomatic foresight as key components of national resilience.
Sri Lanka’s strategic identity is shaped by its location in the Indian Ocean and a complex history. This history encompasses colonial periods, post-independence political changes, a lengthy civil conflict, and ongoing ethnic and religious tensions, all of which have left enduring institutional and social effects. Recent challenges, including the 2022 economic collapse, widespread corruption, and emerging threats such as climate change, cybersecurity issues, organised crime, and drug trafficking, underscore the critical need for an updated security strategy.
The book tackles this issue by presenting a detailed security framework across 13 chapters. Each chapter targets a particular strategic aspect, offering actionable advice and policy suggestions.
